Interview with Wellinton Alves on Powerman & Iron Fist mini

To complete the expectations and questions for upcoming Powerman & Iron Fist mini , i first interviewed writer Fred Van Lente (click here to read),  i got the chance to interview one half of  the creative team, artist Wellinton Alves (Nova,Marvel Zombies Return,Darkhawk). Here is what we talked about :

IFF-You previously worked with Fred Van Lente on Marvel Zombies Return,and my first interview with Fred Van Lente, he praised your work a lot. How is it like reuniting with him again on Powerman & Iron Fist

WA-Yes, the marvel Zombies was great, and I loved that issue, but in Power Man and Iron Fist, Fred is doing an awesome work, he bring us with great action, and his ideas are always fantastic!

IFF-How do you process or approach a new character like Vic that has been recently designed by Mahmud A.Asrar putting his trademark on the overall appearance. Do you tweak / redesign or come up with all whole new design?

WA-Well, i try to keep the same things like A.Asrar did before, but I like the characters more real than just like superheroes, and the design for Vic is great so I did not change his appearcence, and of course I put on my pencils with a lot of shadows that gave some great shots.

IFF-You did the artwork for Shadowland : Blood on the Streets which because of Shadowland had the dark gritty tone, how will the Powerman & Iron Fist mini differ from blood on the streets in terms of the tone, setting and direction.

WA-Power Man and Iron Fist is not different from Shadowland, we will keep the same work we did on Shadowland, because the final look was great and people liked that,I'll do the backgrounds, and more real characters as possible, also a lot of shadows and great street shots.

IFF-What is the creation process like with Fred Van Lente? And how are his script coming?
WA-well, he first send an initial script, this way I can start the layouts and we save time for the final pencils, and if we have any changes on the script, they tell me before I finish the page. Then he send me some notes for final pencils and after that I do the final drawing.

IFF-Though Iron Fist appearance on Blood on the street was not much,I personally liked the yellow shirt outfit you used for Danny, were you a fan of Iron Fist prior to the series? How is it like drawing him from just one issue in blood on the streets to a mini series ?

WA-yes, I always liked Iron Fist, I love ninjas and their traditions, so in Shadowland I had a chance to do that, so i am loving drawing Iron fist, he is a great character.

IFF-Recently in the marvel universe aside from Danny's regular costume,Danny can be seen wearing the new white costume and Danny is seen wearing it for issue 3 solicit cover as well. Which outfit are you going to use?

WA-I will use the traditional green uniform, just with a few changes.I think when the character is good we don't need to change his look.

IFF-You have done galaxy artwork for Nova as well as horrific artwork for Marvel Zombies, now you have a street book Powerman & Iron Fist,how difficult or easy is it for you to incorporate different themes?

WA-this is a good question, well, I think is more easy to draw galaxy artworks, like Nova, or a sci fi book than a real scene like a New York street,because we can create everything and we don't lose much time looking for references, so in PowerMan and Iron fist, I have more problems to make a page great and beautiful.


IFF-Fred Van Lente mentioned just like the first mini, he will bring back more characters from the old powerman and iron fist series. From your artistic perspective how will you bring back the characters? will you give them a modern look or stick to their original look?

WA-well, we really have new great characters on the mini, the ones I never saw before,we are creating a new look for them,we need something more realistic and I am sure people will like them.

IFF-Of all the characters which one were you excited to draw and why? and do you have any favorite

WA-My favorite character is Thor, I love north mythology and I would love to do something with him in the future, but I think that a great story should be in Asgard or Norway in a Viking age.

IFF-Aside from Powerman & Iron Fist mini what other projects are you working on that you want to share?

WA-Besides Power Man and Iron Fist i am doing some projects for Dark Horse, and I would love to do Thor, spider man, Hulk...man I have a big list here.

IFF-In general what are fans going to expect and any last words for Iron Fist Fans

WA-A great book with a great mystery, ohhhh!!! hahahaha yes we have a big mystery and I am exited to know the final of this. and for all Iron Fist fans, i can tell you that we are working on a great project which  we are dedicating every line and images to the fans.
