Interview with Shane McCarthy

Coming this December, writer Shane McCarthy and artist Nick Dragotta will take Iron Fist on a quest with no other than Deadpool as his sidekick. I got the privilege to interview Shane McCarthy about his upcoming issue.

IFF-How did Iron Fist team up with Deadpool come about.

SM-I've been working on some things with the chaps and chapettes at Marvel for a little while now and this delightful gift got thrown into my lap out of nowhere.  I was asked to do an issue of Deadpool Team-Up and was given free reign as to who I'd like to use.  The obvious choice was Iron Fist. Why obvious?  Because he's painfully awesome.  That's why.  Plus I love yellow boots.

IFF-How was it like writing Iron Fist, were you a fan of Iron Fist prior to this issue?

SM-It was a real joy writing Danny.  I've been a fan for quite a while and especially of his latest treatment so it was an absolute pleasure.  Danny's got a wonderful every man quality about him that I find very attractive in a character.  It was also fun putting the often wisecracking Danny up against someone far more zany than himself.

IFF-Where will it be centered Deadpool's universe or Iron Fist's universe? and is this a stand alone issue or  will it build to something else?

SM-It's more of a case of taking both men out of their respective comfort zones and dropping them in together.  There won't be any supporting cast of any kind in the books.  It's just Danny and Wade sharing the limelight as it should be.  Seriously, there's just no room for anything else when you put those two together!
And as much as I'd like to say otherwise, the book is stand alone.

IFF-Are we going to see characters from Iron Fist universe in this issue?..if so what role will they play

SM-See, now I've ruined this question by getting chatty earlier and answering it.  How embarrassing. Although if we get those annoying blog readers that like to skim the interview they may not have picked up on the answer...  So let's pretend I didn't already answer it (and that I didn't call them annoying).
Unfortunately no, there won't be any Iron Fist characters in this story.  Except for Iron Fist, because he's kind of important. A lot.

IFF-It seems like a fun and action packed issue, i am sure fans can already imagine how odd and weird their team up will be, considering how annoying and fun Deadpool is, what else can fans expect

SM-They can already imagine how odd and weird it'll be?  Seriously?!  Man I'm screwed, I was kind of hoping no-one would be able to imagine that.  Darn it.  Um...what else can fans expect.  Hmm.  Well there's guns...and swords.  Would fans expect those?  Oh they would?  Man, tough crowd.
I think fans can expect to see a side to this team-up they never would have seen coming.  There's a side to both men I was happy to uncover in this meeting that even took me by surprise.

IFF-what kind of relationship will they have? will it be more like sidekicks? and reading from the synopsis, are we going to see Iron Fist & Deadpool face off?, am sure both deadpool and iron fist fans will want to see that happen.

SM-They'll have a purely legal relationship and remain friends afterwards.  As for a face off?  Well, there is facing happening...not a lot of offs though. What does that mean?  I have no idea but I will say that fans of Iron Fist will love the final showdown at the end of the book.

IFF-How is Nick Dragotta's art and how is it like working with him.

SM-Nick's art is a dream.  I'm loving everything he's done on this book and working with him has been a blast.  We got to hang out recently in New York (which is saying a lot for me...not because I have no friends but because I don't live in the States) and we had a lot of fun chatting about what we'd be doing with the book.Nick's a cool guy.

IFF-Any last words for Iron Fist fans?

SM-Go the green and gold, Baby.

Nice interview!

The cover made me order this one alone, but seeing Deadpool crack a few comments on the Iron Fist set-up, has been long overdue, as they seem like a pretty cool pairing.

Hopefully the two get some airtime in Heroes For Hire as well.

Great little interview, man. Very impressed you are getting to talk to these creators, and so quickly. This site is well on its way, and so it should be.

I'll definitely be picking this up. Hopefully get to review it on CBR as well.

With Danny Rand being recognized as the best Kung Fu fighter, wouldn't it be sweet to see him fight Wade hand to hand?
